DIY Adventures – Updating a Cute Curio Cabinet

K and I did a massive apartment clean-up this weekend, and as we were diligently figuring out how to tetris yet more boxes into our closet, I started noticing my over abundance of blind box treasures and how they really weren’t being displayed properly. So a few hours later as I was lugging bags of clothes and old books to Goodwill, I peaked inside to see if there was anything that would aid me in my storage/display quest. And voila! A $5 tabletop curio cabinet appeared as if by the generous hand of fate. The bad news? It was a little on the gross side, lots of stains and some kind of clear liquid dripping down the glass (I think it was soap)  as well as a boring white laminate finish. boo. I knew this cabinet had unrealized greatness just waiting to be discovered so I hit Joann’s Fabrics with my faithful sidekick Patrick and got right to work.

This is the original white curio cabinet I purchased from Goodwill (I did give it a thorough cleaning to remove as much gunk and stains as I could):

This boring white cabinet is pleading for help

To complete this amazing transformation I relied on the following useful items:

Folk Art Acrylic Paint in Green Sea and paint brushes

Scrapbook Paper (for the walls, back areas and “floors” for the interior of each box level)

Sponge Brush

DIY Modge Podge (equal parts Elmer’s Glue and Water shaken in a jar)

Cute new knob and some wood/glass/ceramic glue to attach it

Basically I used the paint to brighten up the outside of the cabinet and my amazing scrapbook paper  to decorate the inside areas of the box. I love scrapbook paper, they sell TONS of different kinds and they are amazing for miniatures and tiny sets since they can easily resemble wallpaper and carpet patterns.

high style on a low budget

After letting the paint dry and going back for touch-ups, I used the DIY modge podge mixture to adhere the scrapbook squares to the inside of the cabinet. I’m not an expert ‘podger by any means so I ended up with some wrinkles, but of course I think that adds to the appeal. There are a bunch of tools and Modge Podge tutorials out there if you are looking for more guidance on these types of crafts.  Another great aspect of using the scrapbook paper is that when you buy a pack, you are basically guaranteed to find a variety of patterns/solids that naturally complement each other. I decided to go with a pattern for the floors and back walls but left the sides neutral. This is also because I didn’t want the box itself to overshadow the cool toys it was going to display.

While I could have used an actual knob to replace the white wooden blob the original cabinet came with, I found these cute little scrapbook accessory knobs at Joann’s so I had to use some wood/ceramic glue to attach it. There are still a few rough edges I need to trim with an x-acto knife, but overall I think the project turned out really well and will serve as the perfect display case for my rapidly expanding random toy collection.

At last, a stylish curio cabinet with a timeless allure

Cute Holiday Gift Ideas 2012

Greetings friends. Nothing like a little last minute holiday shopping to make your spirits bright. But luckily that is why they invented the Internet, where the vast expanses of cyberspace are parted to reveal amazingly cute and discounted gift items that can be shipped overnight. I’ve been diligently crossing off all the names on my holiday gift list but as is the curse of gift shopping, I keep finding really cute things I just want to buy for myself. I haven’t caved in yet, but there will be some post-Christmas splurges–trust. Anyway, so here are a few of my favorite holidays gifts of 2012 that might be perfect for someone on your list, or yourself.

Check out this cute wallet shaped like an envelope from Modcloth. Love the Heart Stamp closure.

Loving the Dapper-ism Bow Tie Section

I am definitely loving a few pieces from the Target + Neiman Marcus Designer Collaboration project that is going on right now, even if many of the items are a bit on the pricey side. However, this Tory Burch Lunch Box is the BEES KNEES, the KNEES I tell you! And it’s only $20.

So I don’t actually have a dog right now, but I am still considering getting this Zombie Foot Dog Toy from ThinkGeek so my cats can stare at it….can I borrow your dog?

Watch a Tiny Robot Ride a Bicycle!

Don’t you just love self-explanatory blog titles? Presented for your viewing enjoyment, here is a tiny robot riding a bicycle. Apparently it was made in Japan and you can buy it for $2,200 which isn’t really that awful if you happen to have a ridiculous amount of money to spend on robots solely invented to ride a bicycle (meaning, not me). So for all of us plebs, just enjoy this video of said robotic bicycling ridin’ For Free! In the immortal words of poet Anne Carson, Let’s Buy It, What a Bargain.

Adorable Animal Cake Toppers

So I promised (or warned, either way) you earlier that wedding fodder may be on the  way and here it is. These radtastic wedding cake toppers are custom made by Etsy seller Kikuike and there is no end to the cuteness! Wedding  cake toppers seem like such an interesting detail, one of those little things that shouldn’t seem like a big deal but when an artist takes that idea and makes something like this, I will kindly take off my hat and bow to the cute. I also firmly believe that these are not entirely wedding specific as I would just display them over my house. So many cute animals to choose from, including penguins!

Cuddly Logs Make Tree Hugging Less Painful

Yay for Crafty Crafts and the Crafty Craftsters who make them! That’s what I say anyway. I also say things like “Hey, that tree is Tots Adorbs but alas the scourge of splinters!”  Ok, maybe I don’t say that so much, but now that I know Cuddly Logs exist, I have a solution to that very dilemma. Etsy Crafter Erika AKA – My Imaginary Boyfriend sells these fantastic  screen printed logs and also sells kits in case you want to make them yourself! Loves. You can even get them in brown or white (Birch) based on your preferred aesthetic.

Wool Log Pillows from My Imaginary Boyfriend

Woodn't You Love To Cuddle With These Logs???

Apart from the basic fact that these wool logs are RIDIC in the cute department, I may admit to having a woodsy bias based on the fact that I am planning a foresty-type inspired wedding. Yes, it’s true. As Space Ghost once said, “Everything gets married, even spiders and bugs” so Kaleb and I are tying the knot . This is basically a warning because I don’t want you to be surprised with what will likely be an influx of adorable wedding-esque items showing up over the next year or so (yeah, we’re taking our time, we’ve already been together 7 years so no rush really). That being said, feel free to buy these for me cause they also totally go with our tree house inspired apartment.

Tiny KeepOn Robot Dances & Cuddles and Now it’s $40

OK, the first question is obviously “how did I not know this tiny, adorable, dancing, cuddle robot existed?”. The answer is: I have NO IDEA, but the good news is that I know about it now. And now is better than then because now I might actually be able to BUY one as the original version of the KeepOn Robot is more expensive than my car.

KeepOn is made by BeatBots, a company that is awesome and makes robots for research and therapy and fun. Now they are making a toy version of the KeepOn Robot that will retail for $40 and it seems pretty worth it from what I can see so far.

Reason #1 – It DANCES to yr music by finding the beat and rockin’ along with u.

Reason #2 – It responds to human touch by cuddling with you!!!

Bonus Reason:  KeepOn was developed as part of the company’s CareBots line to help special needs patients, such as people with autism, and u can totally feel the love that went into this adorable robot friend.

Millions of thanks to the wonderful Kaleb who sent me this awesome story from CrunchGear, featuring this fantastic video of the KeepOn Robot having fun with a human friend:

As soon as I get my hands on one of these, which will for sure happen at some point in time, I promise to make cute videos and post them right here on Look Out! The Cute!
